Political Relations with Tajikistan, 13.01.2017

Sharing the common cultural heritage originating from valuable universal philosophers and theologians like Mawlana Jalaladdin Rumi, we have a special closeness with Tajikistan. Strong and deep rooted historical and cultural ties and sincere feelings among our peoples constitute the basis of our friendly relations.

After Tajikistan had gained its independence on 9 September 1991, Turkey has recognized Tajikistan as an independent state on 16 December 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 29 January 1992. Our Embassy to Tajikistan was opened on 22 March 1992 and the first Turkish Ambassador to Tajikistan presented his Letter of Credence on 3 April 1992. The Tajik Embassy to Turkey was established on 16 October 1995.

During the civil war in Tajikistan between 1992 and 1997, our Embassy was the only one which continued its daily work. At a time, when other diplomatic missions and foreign companies were leaving the country rapidly, the then Turkish President Mr. Süleyman Demirel paid an important visit to Tajikistan as a gesture of Turkey’s extended hand of friendship, which is still remembered today.

Since then, friendship, brotherhood and cooperation are the main elements of our relations. Relations between Turkey and Tajikistan, which had not recorded enough progress because of the civil war, have lately entered a desired period of multifaceted improvement. There is a strong will on both sides to further improve the cooperation between Turkey and Tajikistan in all fields and Turkey’s help and support for Tajikistan will continue.

An important momentum was gained through the visit of H.E. President Abdullah Gül to Tajikistan on 30-31 May 2009. Similarly, visit of H.E. Imamali Rahman on 17-18 December 2012, and his attendance to Turkish-Tajik Business Forum, gathering many businessmen from both countries, and his presence in Seb-i Arus Ceremony in the memory of Mawlana Jalaladdin Rumi together with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey, has become the most concrete indication of the satisfactory course of the relations between both countries.

Minister of State and Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Ali Babacan visited Tajikistan to attend 38. Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Islamic Development Bank on 20-21 May 2013.  Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu also visited Tacikistan on 21 October 2016.

There has been always cooperation between Turkey and Tajikistan within international organizations such as the UN, the OIC and ECO and solidarity regarding candidacies in international organizations. (Tajikistan supported Turkey’s candidacy for non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council for the term 2009-2010.)

On the other hand, within the framework of Cooperation Plan between two Foreign Ministries, the first meeting of Political Consultations was organized in Dushanbe on 3 May 2013, the second one was arranged in Ankara on 28 February 2014 and third one was held in Dushanbe again on 26 June 2015.

Moreover, in order to strengthen economic, social and cultural relations between Turkey and Tajikistan, besides our Embassy, TIKA Dushanbe Program Coordinatorship and Dushanbe Turkish Education Center (TÖMER) have been successfully continuing their activities.
